Mordt takes share of clubhouse lead

Tyrone Mordt and Johan Edfors were the clubhouse leaders early on day two of the Alfred Dunhill Championship after moving on to nine-under-par for the competition.

In a much better day for South Africans, Mordt, who has never made the cut during his opening year on the Sunshine Tour, shot seven birdies and two bogeys to come around in 67, a combined total of 135, while his Swedish counterpart completed a round of 69 to go with his opening day 66.

Two other home favourites in world number 113 Richard Sterne and 2004 winner Charl Schwartzel were also on nine under for the tournament after playing 16 holes each, with Englishman John Morgan also on the same score after 17.

The other big mover of the day at the Leopard Creek Golf Club was Rory Sabbatini after his eight birdies through 16 holes left him on eight-under par, alongside fellow South African Warren Abery and co-overnight leader Michael Jonzon.

The Swede limped to one-under-par through 14 holes of his second round after mixing a pair of bogeys and one double bogey with his five birdies.

His accomplice Len Mattiace was yet to tee off.

Another Englishman, Lee Westwood on six-under-par after day one was yet to tee off in the co-sanctioned European and Sunshine Tour event, while Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy was on even par through 17.
