Yang storms clear in Ladies German Open
South Korea’s Amy Yang fired a course record nine-under-par 63 to take a five-stroke lead into the final round of the HypoVereinsbank Ladies German Open.
While Michelle Wie was the talk of Munich this week, Yang, another talented 18-year-old, rocketed to the top of the leaderboard.
Yang began the day three shots behind halfway leader Lora Fairclough but carded an eagle, nine birdies and two bogeys to finish 16 under par.
Wales’ Becky Brewerton, last year’s Ladies English Open champion, shot 68 to share second on 11 under with France’s Anne-Lise Caudal (67).
Fairclough could only return a 72 to remain 10 under in a share of fourth place with Joanne Mills (66) and Louise Stahle (69).
Yang, the Ladies European Tour’s current leading money earner after five top-10 finishes in six starts, recorded her lowest round since turning professional in October 2006.
“My putting was really good. It was much better than normal,” said Yang, who was the LET’s youngest ever champion when she won the 2006 ANZ Ladies Masters in Australia as a 16-year-old amateur.
She is aiming for her first victory as a professional this week, as is Wie, who finished the day seven shots behind the leader.
Wie recorded a 70 to finish nine under in a share of seventh position.
“It was very frustrating and I couldn’t get anything going,” said Wie. “I hit a couple of irons a bit longer than I thought.
“I just feel like I left a lot out there. I feel like I am not playing up to my potential and I feel like tomorrow I just have to shoot low.”
