Delaney through to last 16

Leading qualifier Tara Delaney cruised into the last 16 of the Lancôme Irish Ladies Close Championship with a 3 and 1 win over Charlotte Crowe at Lahinch today.

Bidding to add the Irish Close Matchplay title to her brace of Irish Open Strokeplay crowns, the Carlow player will face Killarney's Holli Snelling in Tuesday's second round.

Internationals Maura Morrin, Deirdre Smith and Niamh Kitching also advanced while defending champion Tricia McDonnell overcame a gutsy display from Greencastle's Gemma Hegarty.

In one of the matches of the day, Kilkenny's Eileen Rose Power ended the hopes of Donabate legend Mary McKenna with a 3 and 2 victory.

However, 12-year-old Slieve Russell twins Lisa and Leona Maguire had a mixed day.

While Lisa ended the hopes of Irish Junior International Vicki Power, Leona lost to Carlow's Karen Delaney at the 19th.
