Harrington falls short of top 10
Padraig Harrington’s victory in the Irish Open was not enough to take him back into the world’s top 10.
A relatively weak field for the event meant that only 28 world ranking points were on offer to the winner, and Harrington improves just one place to 11th after becoming the first home winner for 25 years.
It will be different in Europe this week, though.
The entry list for the BMW PGA Championship includes five of the game’s top 10 - Ernie Els, Vijay Singh, Henrik Stenson, Retief Goosen and Luke Donald.
Australian Adam Scott, the current number four, last month announced his intention to appear as well, but subsequently withdrew “for personal reasons”.
There is no change in the top 10 this week, but as well as Harrington leap-frogging over Sergio Garcia, Masters champion Zach Johnson moves up from 15th to a career-high 13th after adding the AT&T Classic in Atlanta.
