Ryder Cup clean-up operation gets underway at K Club

An extensive clean-up operation is underway at the K Club following a successful and lucrative Ryder Cup competition.

Europe retained the trophy yesterday in front of a capacity crowd at the Co Kildare course.

Greenkeepers estimate that the Palmer Course will need at least two years to recover from the damage caused by staging golf's premier event.

Speaking at the closing ceremony last night, the Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, paid tribute to everyone involved.

"We have witnessed a sporting spectacular over the past three days," he said.

"We've seen the best players from both sides of the Atlantic competing in a great team effort, playing for each other, supporting each other and most of all, doing it with such style and sportsmanship.

"We thank you for the thrills, for the excitement and for the memories of the last few days."
