Spectators at the Open golf championship are being advised to apply due diligence after ‘Fire Risk’ warnings were posted on giant leaderboards around the Royal Liverpool course today.

Temperatures have soared into the mid-30s, with even hotter weather forecast for tomorrow before things start to cool down for the start of the tournament on Thursday.

“We have liaised with all the appropriate authorities and are advising spectators to take care and apply due diligence given the hot weather and the dry conditions on the course,” said director of championships David Hill.

“The fire authorities are close at hand and are aware of all the measures we have put in place.”

Peter Dawson, the R&A chief executive, added that parts of the course have started to be watered to keep the grass from dying off.

There is also a chance of thunderstorms later in the week.
