Play-off joy for Han

Hee-Won Han birdied the final two holes of regulation play to force a play-off with fellow Korean Meena Lee, then won on the fourth extra hole to claim the LPGA Corning Classic in New York.

Both Han and Lee took advantage of a collapse by compatriot Jeong Jang, who stumbled to a four-over-par 76 and blew a three-shot lead.

Lee actually had the better final round, firing a six-under 66 to give her the clubhouse lead.

But Han’s 68 featured a flawless back nine at the Corning Country Club with birdies on the last two par-four holes.

That left both players at 15 under on 273 and sent them to the fourth play-off on the LPGA Tour this year.

On the third extra hole, Lee stayed alive by sinking a 10-foot par putt after driving into deep rough and punching out.

But Lee was not as fortunate at the next hole after her approach shot cleared the green into the second cut and a remarkable chip-and-run rimmed the cup and rolled past about eight feet.

Lee missed her par putt but Han did not, ending the longest play-off in tournament history and claiming the near-£100,000 (€145,000) first prize.

Veteran Brandie Burton was third on 274 after a 70 and Scotland’s Mhairi McKay claimed fourth spot after shooting a final final round of 68.
