Dreadful start for Jimenez

Miguel Angel Jimenez made a dreadful start to the defence of his BMW International Open title in Munich.

On a course where low scoring is the norm, Jimenez found himself three over par after just five holes of his opening round at Nord-Eichenried.

Europe’s most prolific winner last year – his win here one of four victories in 2004 – Jimenez ran up a double-bogey six on the 10th, his opening hole this morning.

And after repairing some of the damage with a birdie on the 13th, promptly suffered another double bogey on the next.

That left him eight shots behind early leader Robert-Jan Derksen, the Dutchman going to the turn in 31 with three birdies and an eagle.

Jimenez was not the only star name to fall foul of the 472-yard 10th, England’s Luke Donald also running up a six before recovering with birdies at the 11th and 13th.

Former champion John Daly, who was 27 under par in winning here in 2001, escaped from the 10th with just a bogey and birdied the next three holes to lie two-under.
