Lundberg shades Moscow play-off

Third-round leader Mikael Lundberg triumphed at the fourth play-off hole against Englishman Andrew Butterfield to win the Cadillac Russian Open at the Le Meridien Moscow Country Club.

The Swede had appeared to be comfortable after getting to 16 under with five holes to play but Butterfield’s incredible late charge of an eagle and four birdies put him in the clubhouse lead at 15 under.

Lundberg dropped a shot at the 14th but recovered superbly from sand at the 18th, his approach finishing within five feet, only to miss his birdie chance which would have given him victory.

That took the duo back down the 18th – three times in fact as they both went par-bogey-par – before the action switched to the par-five 17th.

Butterfield, from Bromley, left himself an impossible chip with his third after finding the rough on the short side and finished the full width of the green away from the flag.

Lundberg rolled his long eagle putt to within 18 inches and when Butterfield could not hole his 30-foot birdie attempt the Swede tapped in to earn a European Tour exemption until the end of 2006.

The Swede had closed with a final-round 69 but Butterfield eclipsed that with a six-under-par 66 to give himself a chance.
