Teenager Michelle Wie’s bid to become the first woman to make the cut on a men’s PGA Tour in 60 years began with an encouraging opening round at the John Deere Classic in Silvis, Illinois.

The Hawaiian 15-year-old carded a one-under score of 71 – five shots off the early pace set by Canadian Glen Hnaituk and the USA’s Craig Bowdon.
