Reid pulls off stunning victory

Mike Reid, despite being six shots down with nine holes to play, pulled off a remarkable victory at the Senior PGA Championship in Pennsylvania.

Reid eagled the 18th in regulation and minutes later birdied the same hole to edge Dana Quigley and Jerry Pate on the first play-off hole.

As he approached the 10th tee, Reid found himself six shots behind Quigley but birdies at the 11th and 14th and the closing eagle got him to eight under and tied with the latter, who was already in the clubhouse after an even-par 72.

Pate, who won the US Open in 1976, watched Reid drain his long eagle putt before he lined up a three-footer of his own that would have given him the championship.

But Pate pushed the putt right and tapped in for bogey, dropping him into a three-way tie for the lead.

Pate had another putt for birdie to tie Reid in the play-off but missed to give Reid his first major championship.
