Leonard holds on for victory
Justin Leonard, who entered the final round of the St Jude Classic with the biggest 54-hole lead on the PGA Tour this year, just held on for a narrow victory.
Leonard began the day with an eight-stroke advantage but struggled to a three-over-par 73.
However, his 14-under total of 266 was just enough to edge two-time defending champion David Toms by one shot in Memphis, Tennessee.
Leonard, who picked up his second victory of the season and 10th of his career, also became the first player since Vijay Singh at the 2004 PGA Championship to win without recording a birdie in the final round.
He carded three bogeys and 15 pars to take home a first-place cheque worth almost €728,000.
Toms closed with a 63, including a 30 on the back nine, to put the pressure on Leonard.
He needed only 21 putts, birdied the 13th and 14th, eagled the par-five 16th and sank another birdie putt on the 17th.
Toms gave himself a chance on the last for another birdie but slid a 15-footer just to the right of the cup.
Having won the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic in January, Leonard becomes the fifth multiple winner on Tour this year, joining Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Vijay Singh and Kenny Perry.
Fred Funk finished alone in third at nine under while Davis Love III and Heath Slocum tied for fourth another shot back.
