McLardy makes his move

Andrew McLardy closed to within one shot of overnight leader and fellow South African Titch Moore in the SAA Open at the Royal Durban Country Club.

The Randpark professional carded a three-under 69 and was six under for the tournament with Moore due to begin his second round later this afternoon.

McLardy started off slowly, dropping a shot on the par-four fifth before picking up four birdies in the last five holes to match his score from round one.

American Bruce Vaughan, who shared the overnight lead with Moore, slipped one shot back with a disappointing 73.

Vaughan had surprised everyone, including himself, in the first round by posting a 65 in his first competitive round of golf since a year out of the game following knee surgery.

But while things went his way on day one, Vaughan was not as lucky on day two, and he admitted his knee was causing him trouble.

“My knee hasn’t really woken up this morning, it is kind of sore but that is no real excuse because I hit a lot of bad shots,” he admitted.

The cooler conditions and light drizzle made the going challenging with a number of higher scores than on the hot first day.

Norwegian Lars Brovold briefly moved onto the leaderboard before dropping two shots on the last three holes to settle for a 72 and four under for the tournament.

Ireland's Darren Clarke is currently tied in 66th place after seven holes on +2.
