World Cup to visit Algarve
Next year’s World Cup will be held at the new Arnold Palmer-designed Victoria Club at Vilamoura in the Algarve.
This season’s event is in Seville in three weeks’ time, featuring seven of Europe’s Ryder Cup-winning side – Sergio Garcia and Miguel Angel Jimenez for Spain, Luke Donald and Paul Casey for England, Padraig Harrington and Paul McGinley for Ireland and Thomas Levet for France.
Twenty-four teams of two compete for a title worth a million dollars to the winners.
Madalena Torres, executive vice-president for the Portuguese National Tourism Board, said: “Following the success of Euro 2004, Portugal is committed to bringing more world-class events to the country.”
The United States have won the event – to be staged next year from November 17-20 – a record 23 times, with David Duval and Tiger Woods successful in Argentina in 2000 when the World Cup was first played as a World Golf Championships event.
