Ireland win foursomes in Curtis Cup
Great Britain and Ireland won the foursomes 2-1 on the second day of the Curtis Cup at Formby to tie the match at 6-6.
But they will have to produce something extra special in the singles this afternoon against the Americans who won 5-1 yesterday.
If the visitors were as inept in that department as they have been in the alternate shot game then the Ada O’Sullivan will tonight be celebrating becoming the first captain to ensure all four major team trophies were held on this side of the Atlantic.
The Ryder, Solheim and Walker cups are under lock and key at Formby ready to be put on display with the Curtis if the host nation prevail, which is a tall order.
It is possible they could even be wheeled out if that is not the case, which would at least give some home comfort to the huge galleries.
There was plenty for them to cheer about this morning when Emma Duggleby kept her 100% record, combining with Kelley McKevitt to beat Erica Blasberg and Sarah Huarte two and one.
The pair, never behind, were five up after 10 holes but had to repel a late American revival.
Anne Laing and Claire Coughlan found themselves two down when Michelle Wie and Elizabeth Janangelo birdied the first and third holes but thereafter took charge of the proceedings to win three and two.
Nicola Timmins and Danielle Masters were fighting a losing battle from the start, a hat-trick of birdies by Brittany Lang and Annie Thurman from the second leaving them three down and their opponents closed out the match five and four on the 14th green.
