Roe disqualified again

Mark Roe, famous for seeing his dream of winning the Open dashed by a rules blunder last year, was disqualified again in Heidelberg today.

Once again it was for signing for a wrong score – but this time there will not be the same sympathy.

Roe took five putts on the short sixth in his first round of the Deutsche Bank-SAP Open, but a marshal later reported to officials that he thought the ball was still moving on the last of them.

European Tour chief referee John Paramor spoke to Roe, who said he was not sure. So this morning playing partners Soren Kjeldsen and Jean-Francois Remesy were questioned as well and, while they were also unsure, their caddies thought the marshal was right.

If the investigation had taken place before Roe signed his card he would have been penalised two strokes, turning his quadruple bogey seven into a sextuple bogey nine and his 78 into an 80.

As it was, though, Paramor had no alternative but to disqualify him.

The 41-year-old from Sheffield was lying joint fourth in the Open after three rounds at Sandwich last summer when it was discovered he and Jesper Parnevik had failed to exchange scorecards.
