Lane inches away from huge payday

Former Ryder Cup player Barry Lane was 10 inches away from winning a diamond tee worth £342,000 (€495,000) today.

The tee was on offer for the first hole-in-one on the cliff-top 234-yard 11th in the final round of the Algarve Portuguese Open at Vale do Lobo.

Lane took a quintuple bogey eight on the hole in the third round, but this time his three-iron shot was arrow-straight, only to stop just short.
