Colin Montgomerie and Nick Faldo, rivals for the job of European Ryder Cup captain in 2006, today joined forces in calling for team selection to be based on worldwide performances rather than just the European Order of Merit.

The selection criteria is up for discussion ahead of the 2004 match in America, with a proposal that five players would be chosen from the European list and five from the world rankings, with the last two down to the captain’s discretion.
