Monty and Langer share Volvo Masters
Ryder Cup partners Bernhard Langer and Colin Montgomerie faced a play-off for the Volvo Masters at Valderrama today.
By the time they walked to the 18th tee, however, the players could hardly see the landing area for their drives and after discussion involving the sponsors and European tour bosses Ken Schofield and George O'Grady the two were given the chance to agree a tie.
They did and the title was shared just like the 1986 Lancome Trophy, where Langer and Seve Ballesteros agreed a share of the honours after six extra holes.
Montgomerie also had to face officials over an incident on the 10th green - and he looked furious.
Under discussion was whether Montgomerie touched or addressed a moving ball after missing a five-foot putt.
The drama took some attention away from a gripping finish in which Montgomerie sank birdie putts of 20 and four feet on the 16th and 17th, but then failed with an eight-footer on the last.
That meant he and Langer, who had birdied the 17th as well, finished on the three-under mark of 281 – subject to whether Montgomerie was to have a two-stroke penalty added.
What was certain was that Welshman Bradley Dredge, who took a one-stroke lead into the final day and remained out in front until he bogeyed the short 15th, finished third and so is still waiting for his first tour win.
Joint fourth were Australian Peter O’Malley and Argentina’s Angel Cabrera, who still had a chance with two to play but bogeyed them both.
