Weather halts Starwood PGA
Today's fourth and final round in the Starwood PGA of Europe Championship in Sardinia had to be called off due to horrific weather conditions.
Torrential rain and winds in excess of 90km/h lashed the Pervo Golf course on the Costa Smeralda during play making the course unplayable.
The morning tee-off had to be postponed for an hour due to the heavy rain and then when the gale force winds blew up it was decided to call a halt to the action.
The organising committee then issued the following statement: "After considering a number of options, and after discussion with the sponsors Starwood Hotels, it has been decided that the final round of the championship will be completed tomorrow in conjunction with the pro-am tournament."
The pro-am format is better-ball stableford with a team comprising of one professional and one amateur.
This will serve as the championship fourth round and the professional's score will also count towards the pro-am prize-fund of €15,000.
However, meteorological advice is that the weather may not improve so a review of the situation will be taken before tee-off in the pro-am.
Headfort professional Brendan McGovern is Ireland's best-placed player in joint sixth place but nine shots behind the leader.
