Tearful Torrance hails Euro heroes
European captain Sam Torrance broke down in tears after leading his team to a glorious Ryder Cup victory over the United States at The Belfry today.
Paul McGinley gave Europe the 14 1/2 points they needed for victory with an 18-foot putt on the last green.
The European heroes immediately invaded the 18th and Torrance told Sky Sports 1: “They have all done a great job, I am so proud of every one of them.
“This had nothing to do with me. I led them to the water and they drank copiously. Nothing compares with this.”
Hero McGinley said: “What is it about the Irish and the Ryder Cup? It was fantastic.
“I am happy for Sam who has been a majestic captain. We‘ve had a great time, just great.”
Asked what he felt as he lined up the putt on the last, McGinley said: “Don‘t miss it! I was fortunate – I had that putt two years ago in the Benson and Hedges to come second. I had to have the nerve to hit it on line.”
Colin Montgomerie, who set Europe on the way with victory in the first match, told Sky Sports 1: ``Sam said he would only cry if we won. All credit to him. He had the strength to send our top players out first and it worked very well.
“To think only two out of 12 Americans have won. This is the best singles performance we have ever had. It says to the Americans that we can play with them and beat them.
“I know how much it means to us and our whole tour.
“Sam has had great support from Mark James and Ian Woosnam. It was great team spirit between us. Yes we had another year to get it but it was a fantastic team spirit.”
Asked why he was so laid-back throughout his match, Monty replied: “I wasn‘t laid back. I had to back off the tee shot on the first because the crowd were so loud.
“I had to win the first game to show it was possible. I was just doing my job. I love competition, I love competing more than I love golf and this is the ultimate competition.”
