Bartholomew and Diaz lead the ladies

Jean Bartholomew fired a bogey-free five-under-par 67 to tie for the lead with Laura Diaz after the second round of the Corning Classic in New York.

A Long Island native, Bartholomew collected three birdies and an eagle to finish on nine under par at 135 to share the second-round lead for only the second time in her seven-year Tour career.

Bartholomew said: ‘‘It’s the kind of course I feel I can go low on when I’m playing well, and I guess I have some memories of some low numbers here.

‘‘I’m from New York, so maybe it’s a New York thing, play at the state juniors and all that stuff.

‘‘And my family comes because I’m from Long Island and it’s only five hours. It’s a combination of things.’’

Diaz, born in the Albany suburb of Scotia but now living in Florida, also played the Corning Country Club without a bogey, logging three birdies in her 69.

‘‘I didn’t putt as well as I would have liked,’’ said Diaz. ‘‘I hit it a little better than I think I scored today, but I’ll take 69 and head into the weekend.’’

Beth Bauer is tied with Korean rookie Jung Yeon Lee for third place on eight under at 136 after a second straight 68.

LPGA Hall of Famer Beth Daniel and Italy’s Silvia Cavalleri are two shots back at 137 while former champions Rosie Jones and Briton Alison Nicholas are among four players tied at six under.
