Monty and Clarke hit the front

Colin Montgomerie and Darren Clarke showed some vintage form in the second round of the Deutsche Bank Open.

Montgomerie, who, like Clarke, was a doubtful starter before the tournament and is on pain-killers for a back problem, added a 68 to his opening 66 for a 10-under-par halfway total of 134.

He shared top spot with German Alex Cejka as Tiger Woods teed off again seven behind.

Clarke, who tore a thigh muscle trout-fishing in Hampshire on Monday, would have been alongside them on 10-under but for finishing with a bogey.

The two Ryder Cup colleagues both eagled the 603-yard 17th and Clarke, on anti-inflammatory tablets, led after adding birdies on the first, third and fourth.

He made up for bogeying the next by picking up yet another shot at the eighth, but a drive into rough on the 477-yard par four ninth proved costly.

Former Open champions Nick Faldo and John Daly both looked certain to miss the halfway cut on two over after their second successive rounds of 73. It was expected to fall at level par.

Lee Westwood, two over on Friday, was another afternoon starter like Woods, but he set off again with a birdie four - as did Ian Woosnam to improve to five under.

Cejka led overnight following a 64 and had a further five birdies, but also three bogeys this time for a 70.

Alongside Clarke was Welshman Mark Pilkington, who had five birdies in eight holes after turning in 33 and needed a closing par for a 64.
