Golf: Wall prepares for big day
Professional golfers call on all sorts of people these days, coaches, sports psychologists, dieticians even masseurs.
England’s Anthony Wall, however, consulted a priest before the start of the ANZ Championship in Sydney tomorrow.
But the 26-year-old Londoner was not asking the Almighty to stop the rain or seeking heavenly help for his putting.
Wall was merely making arrangements for his wedding in the city on December 6.
His fiancee Sharon was a Qantas stewardess whom Wall met on a flight to Australia three years ago. They became engaged last June after Wall took the halfway lead in the Irish Open.
‘‘She was having to go back home the next day and I thought I should do the right thing,’’ he said.
Wall, winner of the Dunhill Championship in South Africa two years ago, finished fifth in the same event three weeks ago, then repeated that in the Johnnie Walker Classic in Perth and was 11th in the Heineken Classic in Melbourne on Sunday.
It has put him 13th in the Order of Merit going into this week and victory on Sunday could take him third.
With nearly £120,000 (€196,000) on offer, it should also take care of the wedding costs.
