Golf: Doyle upstages pros at Little Island

Eddie Doyle, from The Heath Golf Club in Co Laois, upstaged the European Tour pros in yesterday's £12,000 Motorola pro-am tournament at Little Island in Cork.

Doyle carded a super 68 (four-under-par) to win by two shots from Philip Walton with Des Smyth in a group on 71 and Eamon Darcy down the leaderboard in joint 14th place on 73.

The winner had a steady outward trip as he eased to the turn in one-under-35

with a birdie at the long second hole and eight pars.

He then highlighted his card with eagle three at the 451-yards 11th hole where he hit the green with two woods.

Doyle followed that with a two at the short 13th before making his only mistake of the round - a bogey five at the 14th hole.

However, Doyle wiped out that error with birdie three at 16 for an inward run of 33 shots, three-under-par.

The team event was won by Allen Park, Co Antrim, pro Stephen Hamill and his

trio of local amateurs - John Daly, Dermot Troy and Dermot Gleeson.
