Ireland's Paul McGinley will take part in a sudden-death play-off with Scotland's Paul Lawrie and England's Daren Lee at the Welsh Open after today's final round was cancelled because of heavy rain.

The £1m tournament was already reduced to 54 holes because of rain on Thursday and, with no apparent break in the rain today, officials decided to send the tournament leaders into a play-off.

The three men were all tied for the lead on six under par.

Today will be the first time in European Tour history that an event shortened to 36 holes has to be decided by a play-off.

Five other official events have been shortened to 36 holes, but each time there was a clear leader at that stage.

Ironically, one of those was Lawrie, who won his first title in the Open Catalonia in 1996 after the final round was cancelled.
