In between, he played golf of considerable brilliance but his inconsistency over the four days left him off the pace as one of the most prestigious tournaments on the US PGA Tour came to an exciting climax.

A final round of 66 by the 27 year-old world number three saw him finish on seven under 281 in a tie with Phil Mickelson who finished with the same score but adrift ofAmericans James Hahn and Roberto Castro and England’s Justin Rose.

“Take away the start and the finish and it was a pretty good scorecard”, said McIlroy who now turns his attentions to this week’s Players Championship, the so called “fifth major”, at Sawgrass, and the following week’s Irish Open.

“I drove the ball really well, hit a lot of better iron shots and converted a lot of chances but they were two soft bogeys at the 1st and 18th.

“At the last, it was the complete wrong club selection. I should have gone with one less club and tried to hit it hard and turn it right to left into that back pin position.

“I was aiming a little left and cut it back with the wind and it just wasn’t the right shot to play. I felt it was the best way to try and get it close and make a three and paid the price by not making a good swing.

“I have two big weeks coming up now, the Players and then the Irish Open.

66 today is a good score and leaves me confident going into those events.

Meanwhile Korea’s Wang Jeunghun claimed his first European Tour title in amazing fashion by beating Spain’s Nacho Elvira in a play-off for the Hassan Trophy in Rabat.

Wang birdied the 18th to force extra holes and repeated the trick twice in the play-off at Royal Golf Dar Es Salam after he and Elvira had finished tied on five under par.
