Birthday boy McIlroy climbs sport’s rich list

Rory McIlroy’s selective scheduling hasn’t found favour with everyone this season but figures from the third annual The Sunday Times Sport Rich List would suggest the US Open champion tends to know what he is doing.

The 23-year old returned to action, at the Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte, yesterday after a three-week break and celebrates his birthday today with the help of a €13m fortune to join the top 100 wealthiest sports people in Britain and Ireland.

The Holywood golfer also took a three-week break from the game prior to this year’s US Masters in what he says is an attempt to elongate his time at the top of the tree. “I don’t want to be burned out by the time I’m 30,” he has explained.
