Schwartzel planning to spice up Masters dinner

US Masters champion, Charl Schwartzel has a surprise in store for his fellow Augusta National winning heroes at this year’s traditional ‘Champion’s Dinner’.

It’s customary for the reigning Masters winner to select the menu for the evening, however the South African has plans to go a step further and cook the meal under the famed oak tree at Augusta National.

Schwartzel has submitted his proposal to the Augusta National chiefs but is still awaiting the green light for a traditional South African ‘braai’ or barbecue.

Schwartzel revealed: “I would love to braai there and if so, I want to cook everything myself, but we will just have to wait and see if it is possible, considering the number of people who will be present. If they agree, I could end up with a very sore hand turning all that meat.”

Former winners can expect lamb chops, fillets and a South African traditional sausage called boerewors.

“I have this special spice I can put on my boerewors, so I’ll use that, for sure,” he said.

“But the fillet is my real speciality as I will make this secret marinade for it. It’s just fantastic. Louis Oosthuizen says he loves it so it must be good, and he’s a very fussy meat eater.”

And for dessert? “I will keep it simple and something like ice cream and hot chocolate sauce.”
