‘Three Wise Women’ find answer in back of a buggy
Norwegian superstar Suzann Petersen revealed that Alison Nicholas’s ‘Three Wise Women’ cooked up the winning recipe on their way back out to the far corner of the Meath course.
Like Dublin last Sunday, the Blues came good right at the very death as Pettersen and rookies Caroline Hedwall and Azahara Munoz snatched victory from America.
“The three of us were in the cart — Aza [Munoz], Caroline [Hedwall] and myself going back out the second time and we said that we were going to win the three points in that cart,” revealed Pettersen last night.
“As for the three birdies I got on 16, 17 and 18 I don’t know where they came from. I found them on eBay this morning!
“But this is all about the team. We never gave up right to the end. With an hour to go it looked like we were coming short but who cares now? “This is the best feeling. It is even better than the last win in 2003. To come back and win where the challenge was so big is immense. And we proved them wrong — we can win singles.
“We will all remember this for the rest of our lives. It’s fantastic.”
Sweden’s Hedwall revealed how little she knew about the significance of her immaculate approach to the 18th green until she stood beneath the magnificence of the Killeen Castle backdrop.
“I didn’t know anything when I hit my second shot,” revealed the 22-year-old, set to take the pro game by storm after sealing Europe’s win with a half-point against Ryann O’Toole. “I just wanted to try and get up onto the green and get my half point. Then when I got up there I saw on the scoreboard that Aza had gone one up in her match.
“That’s when I realised that if I made the putt that we would win the match. I hit that good shot and it was just amazing.”
