Clarke: Incredible crowd is making this very special

IT was a day of mixed fortunes for Ireland’s four Major winners at Killarney. Here are their thoughts.

Clarke: Incredible crowd is making this very special

Darren Clarke (-2, 69)

“IT’S been incredible, all of the people clapping and shouting for me. And you know, coming up the last there, I felt like I was coming up winning a tournament on a Sunday afternoon, any Sunday afternoon. It’s been very special.

“They were brilliant. To have as many people walking around today shouting and roaring with me, and with Shane (Lowry) and myself and that group and Pádraig (Harrington) and Damien (McGrane) in the group behind; it was brilliant to have so many people out.”

Rory McIlroy (-1, 70)

“I’M just not driving the ball that great. I just need to be a little more decisive on tees whether I hit it right to left or left to right. I’m sort of stuck in two minds and I need to go and work on it a bit on the range.

“I thought the first 10 holes were good. I kept myself in it. I putted really nicely. Short game was good. And then from 11, when I made my first bogey at 11 it was sort of pretty scrappy on the way in. So I just didn’t hit the ball in the fairway enough to give myself any chances for birdie.”

Graeme McDowell (+1, 72)

“STRIPED it straight down the middle on the first, looking at a birdie chance straightaway and then nothing really happened.

“It was a funny day. I didn’t really hit it in the fairway enough times today. I just wasn’t missing it by much, but you know, a couple of yards just kind of took the control out of my hands coming into the greens.”

Padraig Harrington (+2, 73)

“I drove it well and I putted well, but just didn’t score well. Such is life. Golf is a strange game. Holes that I played well, another day you make birdie, I made bogey on. Some days they go for you. Some they don’t.

“I just don’t think I’m doing too many things right. I hit a nice five iron into 11, and I was trying to go safe into the middle of the green and it’s just got a tiny bit in the wind, pitched to the edge of the green it kicked 30 yards off the green and I chipped it over. I didn’t get on the green. That’s how far from hitting a nice shot.”
