Westwood vents anger at PGA for McIlroy snub
McIlroy wasn’t the least bit bothered by being overlooked for the award, which is voted by players, but Westwood took the chance to vent his annoyance on his Twitter page.
Westwood could not limit his anger to 140 characters that he posted his full complaint on a ‘Twitlonger’ account.
“Sorry 140 letters is not going to be enough for this rant! Just seen Ricky Fowler has been given rookie of the year! Yes he’s had a good year but rory McIlroy 3rd in 2 majors and an absolute demolition of the field at quail hollow! Oh yes and on the winning Ryder cup team! Please! Is this yet another case of protectionism by the pga tour or are they so desperate to win something! Wouldn’t have something to do with Rory not joining the tour next year? Maybe the PGA tour just employs the same voting process as FIFA! Come on, fairs fair!”
McIlroy says he wasn’t the least bit bothered by the snub — because the 21-year-old never considered himself a rookie.
Without polling the players —assuming they even voted— it was difficult to know if McIlroy was snubbed because players don’t consider him a true rookie, or because he announced last month that he would not take up US membership for next year.
“It might be a little of both,” McIlroy said.
* Three of Ireland’s four hopefuls broke par at the European Tour Qualifying School at the PGA Catalunya Resort but none are inside the vital top 30 and ties who will earn the right to join the 2011 Race to Dubai. Niall Kearney and Simon Thornton are the best of the bunch, just a stroke outside the card positions in joint 43rd on one-under par.
Kearney shot a bogey free, five under 65 while Thornton returned a one under 69, a score matched by Colm Moriarty, who got back to one-over for the tournament.
Moriarty is tied for 77th with Belfast’s Damian Mooney, who struggled to a three-over par 75.
