KILLARNEY Golf Club is hoping that a €2 million overhaul of its esteemed Killeen course will propel it back onto the “must play” roster for visitors to Ireland — and ease the financial burden on the club.

The club is seeking contributions of around €1,000 to finance the project which will, club captain Sean Coyne says, help Killeen "regain its rightful place on the golfing circuit".

The club suffered a serious dip in green fees in recent years and its financial burden was increased with the development of a third course at Lackabane, across the road from the established Kileen and O'Mahony's Point tracks. However Mr Coyne insisted that the Lackabane development had paid its way. It was wrong to suggest the third course was a financial millstone, he said. It attracted €230,000 in green fees last year.
