Dohenys GAA have announced their plans to hold a weekend of commemorative events to mark the centenary of the death of Sam Maguire.
The Cork club will host a series of events to honour the memory of one of the most influential figures in the history of the GAA and the man who the All-Ireland senior football title is named after.
Taking place from Friday 5th to Sunday 7th February 2027, the commemorative weekend will celebrate the life, achievements and enduring legacy of the Dunmanway native.
Organised by the Sam Maguire Commemorations Sub-Committee of Doheny, the programme will bring together members of the GAA family, historians, community organisations, schools, public representatives and visitors from across Ireland and overseas.
The weekend has the support of the GAA’s National History & Commemorations Committee and will be attended by Uachtarán CLG, Jarlath Burns.
"Sam Maguire is one of the most significant figures in Irish history and immortalised by the trophy that is arguably the greatest prize in Irish sport,” said the GAA President.
“It was a cup that I chased for 13 years as an Armagh footballer and while it eluded me, I had the pleasure of presenting it to my own son's team in 2024.
“Next February, Sam Maguire's home club The Dohenys in his hometown of Dunmanway will honour his legacy and also pay tribute to the man behind the cup and commemorate what was truly, a life less ordinary."
The commemorative programme will feature a number of significant events, including the unveiling of a specially commissioned bronze bust of Sam Maguire, the official opening of the Sam Maguire Walkway, and a major historical symposium.
There will also be a commemorative football fixture between representative teams from Cork and London GAA, an ecumenical service and wreath-laying ceremony, heritage tours and commemorative ceremonies at locations associated with Sam Maguire's life and legacy.
Daniel O'Donovan, PRO of the Doheny GAA Club and Chairman of the Sam Maguire Commemorations Sub-Committee, added: "Sam Maguire's name is known wherever Gaelic football is played, yet his story begins here in Dunmanway.
“As we approach the centenary of his passing, this is an opportunity for our community to reflect on the life of a remarkable West Cork man whose contribution to the GAA continues to be remembered every time the Sam Maguire Cup is lifted.
“Through these commemorations, we hope to honour his legacy, celebrate our local heritage and ensure that future generations understand the man, the values and the vision behind one of the most iconic symbols in Irish sport."
Further details on the centenary programme, guest speakers and associated events will be announced in the coming months.
