In the end and with the clock/hooter in operation, Dingle were doing their damnedest to avoid conceding a goal against Dr Crokes’s conquerors Mid Kerry, but they had been six points down close to 20 minutes into this semi-final. Dingle managed to go into the break a point to the good and led from there to the conclusion.
Stacks were in the ascendancy throughout, leading by five points on a couple of occasions in the first half and early in the second. They were still two points up in the 52nd minute when Paul Geaney pounced for the first of two late goals to help end Dingle’s 77-year wait for county glory.
It was a contested conclusion to the game but nobody could question the indefatigability of Dingle. Inspired by Steven Sherlock, The ‘Barrs were as much as seven points up and led by five with 11 minutes to go but were reeled in by Dingle who won it at the death with Conor Geaney’s two-point free.
Nine points down at half-time, 10 points behind five minutes into the second half, Paul Geaney’s two-pointer ultimately forced extra-time. Dingle didn’t lead until Geaney’s two-point free in the second half of extra-time.
Paul Geaney 4-29 (1-0 pen, 1 tp, 2 tpfs, 6 frees); Conor Geaney 3-18 (1 tp, 3 tpfs, 2 frees); Dylan Geaney 0-22 (3 tps, 4 frees); Tom O’Sullivan 1-16 (1 tp); Niall Geaney 0-12 (3 tps); Matthew Flaherty 0-9; Tadhg Browne 1-4; Ned Ryan 1-2 (1 tp); Cathal Bambury 0-4; Brian O’Connor 0-3; Billy O’Connor, Mark O’Connor 0-2 each; Conor Flannery, Michael Geaney 0-1 each.
