Reigning champions Thurles CBS have been pitted against De La Salle Waterford in next month’s Harty Cup quarter-finals, what will be a repeat of last season’s semi-final clash.

On the football side, the headline pairing following Monday’s Corn Uí Mhuirí last-eight draw is that of Kerry heavyweights Tralee CBS and St Brendan’s Killarney.

This is the second year in-a-row they are colliding at the quarter-final stage, the Sem winning through with eight to spare last January.

There is a slightly lopsided look to one half of the Harty Cup draw as the winners of the aforementioned Thurles-De La Salle clash will meet whoever emerges from the quarter-final involving Midleton CBS and 2023/24 Dean Ryan Cup champions Nenagh CBS.

Midleton topped their group unbeaten, and while Nenagh also went unbeaten through the group phase, they lost out on top spot to St Flannan’s College owing to a new ruling where head-to-head can’t separate two teams.

St Flannan’s, beaten finalists last February, will be eying a return to the decider after a quarter-final draw that pits them against Our Lady’s Templemore, with the winners progressing on to meet the victors of the game between St Joseph’s Secondary School Tulla and Blackwater Community School Lismore.

The standout pairing in the Corn Uí Mhuirí draw is of course the bringing together of the Sem and Tralee CBS.

The Sem were beaten finalists earlier this year, while it was Tralee CBS who came up short on the concluding afternoon 12 months earlier in the first of the back-to-back wins by Mercy Mounthawk.

St Brendan’s won the last of their 24 titles in 2023, while Tralee’s 16th and most recent Munster post-primary success was 2020.

St Brendan’s opening round defeat to Clonakilty and subsequent second-place finish in Group 4 set up the possibility of a quarter-final clash with Group 3 winners Tralee CBS.

The winner of the Kerry derby can look forward to a semi-final against either St Francis College Rochestown or Intermediate School Killorglin.

Clonakilty Community College, who last week followed a group-topping Corn Uí Mhuirí campaign with Simcox Cup success, have been drawn against High School Clonmel. The Tipp outfit secured their place in the line-up when overcoming last season’s semi-finalists, Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine, in Monday’s delayed conclusion to Group 1.

Clonakilty and Clonmel are on the same side of the draw as the other Kerry quarter-final derby between Presentation Milltown and St Pat’s Castleisland.

The Harty Cup quarter-finals are scheduled for Wednesday, January 7. The football quarter-finals will take place a week later on Wednesday, January 14.

Hurling semis are in the book for Saturday, January 24, the football equivalent again following a week later on Saturday, January 31.
