Kilbrittain emerged as the top seeds from the group stage of the Co-op Superstores Cork PJHC after they had far too much class for Nemo Rangers in Riverstown on Friday night.
They blew Nemo away in the opening quarter, striking for three goals on their way to a 3-20 to 1-10 win to take top spot in Group 2. Philip Wall set up Conor Hogan for goal one in the second minute, Hogan returned the favour to Wall six minutes later before Hogan planted his second after superb work from Mark Hickey.
Wall and Hogan both clipped 0-2 while Mark Hickey scored 0-5. Eoin Kelly had the goal for Nemo while Shane Horgan scored 0-5.
Glen Rovers joined Kilbrittain in the semi-finals after they took top spot in Group 1 after their 1-25 to 0-18 win over Meelin in Glantane. Calvin Healy was the main man for the Glen as he hit Meelin for 0-7 from play, Evan Murphy also clipped 0-7 with 0-4 coming from frees, Nathan Goulding scored 0-5 while Glen Kennefick landed the goal.
John Forrest had 0-6 from play for Meelin, while Nick Lenihan hit 0-8 from frees.
Ballygarvan’s 0-26 to 2-14 win over Argideen Rangers saw them leapfrog the Timoleague men to take top spot in Group 3. Dylan O’Connor led the way for Ballygarvan with 0-5 from play and another 0-5 from frees, Niall Dowd plundered 0-7 while Cillian O’Regan hit 0-3 from midfield.
John Michael O’Callaghan was Argideen’s top man, hitting Ballygarvan for 2-7 while Charlie Twomey notched 0-4. Argideen went into the game with four points on the board, and with Milford beating Tracton by 2-16 to 0-20 in Mourneabbey in the other game in the group, their passage into the quarterfinals was assured.
Cloughduv made sure of their place in the quarter-finals after they beat Barryroe by 1-25 to 1-9 in Páirc Uí Rinn to take second place in Group 2. The Muskerry side came down from the IAHC last year, and here they showed that they intend to bounce straight back with a superb performance.
They rocked Barryroe in the early stages and led by 1-9 to 0-2 after eighteen minutes, Aidan O’Leary with the goal. Olan and Brian O’Donovan helped Barryroe to a mini recovery to leave them trailing by 1-12 to 0-6 at the short whistle, but Cloughduv continued to set the tone from there to the end.
Brian Verling landed 0-8 for Cloughduv, Mark Verling clipped 0-6 while Mark Walsh, Colm O’Leary and Aodh Twomey all had a brace of points. Olan O’Donovan planted a second half goal for Barryroe, Dónal Ó Buachalla scored 0-3 but defeat for Barryroe means that they now face a relegation playoff against Meelin.
Last year’s beaten finalists, St Catherine’s, showed that they have fully recovered from an opening round loss to the Glen as they made it back-to-back victories courtesy of their 0-19 to 0-15 win over St Finbarr’s in Carrigtwohill.
Oisín Fitzgerald was behind everything good that Catherine’s did while also contributing two points to the cause. Rory Galvin hit 0-6 from frees for the Conna/Ballynoe men, Kevin Barry clipped 0-4 while Sean O’Donoghue also had a brace of points.
The Barrs had to settle for third place in Group 1 despite Kevin O’Flynn hitting 0-5, and Caolan O’Connor and David Murray both clipping 0-3.
