Tramore and Fenor celebrate Déise football glory

Fenor got the better of Ballyduff Upper by 0-9 to 0-8 in the Junior decider.

A man of the match performance from Mikey Brennan blasted 14-man Tramore to county Intermediate football glory at Walsh Park on Saturday afternoon.

Brennan and Conor Butler both netted twice as the Seasiders possessed too much firepower for Sliabh gCua (5-10 to 2-5). Their first Waterford Intermediate title since 2008.

Tramore were two goals to the good in as many minutes. A Brennan brace and one from Butler sent them 3-5 to 0-2 ahead by the break. All over bar the shouting.

Brennan accounted for 2-3 of that half time total. The leaders were reduced to fourteen men in the fourteenth minute when Tommy Smyth received a straight red card.

Cillian Tobin got a goal back for Sliabh gCua early in the second period. Seven points was as close as they came however.

A green flag from Eoin Hayes and a penalty from Conor Butler wrapped up a comprehensive fourteen point victory for Tramore. 19 goals in six championship games this season. Jason Sheehan converted a late Sliabh gCua penalty but it was no more than a consolation.

Tramore contested the 2003 senior final against Stradbally but have dropped down the Déise football ranks in recent times. They will play in the premier intermediate grade next year.

The Junior decider was a much tighter affair as Fenor got the better of Ballyduff Upper by 0-9 to 0-8. Iarla Hennessy produced the winner for the Eastern side.

Goalkeeper Michael Mooney was named man of the match after a superb display of shot stopping. Ballyduff scored three goals in the Western final against Shamrocks a week earlier but couldn't find a way past the Fenor number one.

The Eastern champions outscored their opponents five points to one in a strong second half showing as they made amends for last year's county final defeat.

Amid jubilant scenes, captain John Flynn led his team mates up the steps.
