Former Tipperary goalkeeper Philly Ryan to be named county's new senior football manager

“The Nenagh Guardian” have reported Ryan, who manned the posts for The Premier County for 13 seasons, is the recommendation of the football committee to replace Paul Kelly who stepped down after one season in charge.

Former Tipperary goalkeeper Philly Ryan is set to be confirmed as the county’s new senior football manager.

Clonmel Commercials clubman Ryan has managed and coached his club as well as the county’s minors in 2007 and ’08 and their U21s in 2006. He was Commercials' boss when they claimed the senior county title 12 years ago and he has been a coach/selector in their recent county successes.

It was announced at last week’s county board meeting that U20 football manager Niall Fitzgerald will remain in the role as will joint minor managers Shane Hennessy and Damien McCormack.

At the same gathering, Brendan Cummins was given a new two-year term as Tipperary U20 manager. Cummins brought Tipperary to a Munster title this year before they lost out to Offaly in the All-Ireland final.

The Ballybacon-Grange man was first appointed as U20 manager in September 2021 and guided the county to a provincial final the following season.

It is also anticipated James Woodlock will stay on for a fifth year in charge as minor manager having brought Tipperary to a second All-Ireland minor title in three years when they defeated Kilkenny in UPMC Nowlan Park last month.

Liam Cahill remains at the helm of the seniors for a third season in 2025 with the new seven-team Division 1A and an opening Munster SHC clash with Limerick in FBD Semple Stadium to look forward to.
