Wexford prepared to take legal action over Hurling League revamp

Wexford will challenge the proposal to revamp the top tier of the Hurling League to the fullest extent possible, the County Board confirmed.

The proposal sees Cork and Limerick effectively promoted to the current six-team Division 1A to form an eight-team league – and leaves Wexford with Offaly, Laois, Carlow, Antrim and Westmeath in Division 1B.

The lack of Cork, who were relegated from Division 1A, and Limerick, who lost out to Dublin in the 2013 Division 1b final, would have a dramatic effect on the coffers of the six counties left in Division 1B, and has lead to accusations of elitism in hurling.

While results haven’t been great for Wexford over the last few years, things have taken an upward curve of late with their Seniors forcing Leinster champions Dublin to a replay and the U21s shocking Kilkenny to win the Leinster Championship.

In a statement on the Wexford GAA website, Wexford County Board chairman Diarmuid Deveraux confirmed that the county have asked for proposal to be taken off the Clár of Saturday’s Ard Comhairle meeting as it is "not in order."

The County will also seek a meeting with an Coiste Banaistí (Management Committee) on the Friday before the Ard Comhairle summit and are insisting that a two-thirds majority is needed to overturn the structures that are currently in place.

Wexford have promised to exhaust every GAA appeals process possible should the proposal be passed and stress they will “resort to legal remedies should it be required.”
