Limerick club fan faces 96-week ban

A suspension totalling 96 weeks has been proposed for the Dromcollogher-Broadford supporter who was involved in an incident on the pitch during last Sunday's Limerick SFC final.

Martin Stokes got onto the field of play to physically confront Newcastle West's James Kelly who had just been sent-off for an altercation with Stokes' son, Drom-Broadford midfielder Jason Stokes.

The Limerick GAA Competitions Control Committee met last night to review the referee's report and photographs of the on-field clash involving Martin Stokes.

They have decided to hand Martin Stokes the maximum suspension possible for his actions.

The sanction bans him from all GAA pitches and premises and he is also forbidden from operating as a team mentor or club committee member.

Stokes has three days to appeal the ban following receipt of notification. If he chooses not to, he will unable to attend the final replay on Friday night.

Tempers flared late on in the drawn game at the Gaelic Grounds.

Referee Richard Moloney gave Kelly his second yellow card in injury-time and as he departed the pitch, he was confronted by Martin Stokes.

With Kelly still on the pitch, Drom-Broadford then took a quick free to tee up Micheal Reidy for the levelling point which sent the final to a replay - 0-13 to 2-7.

The final replay, the first in the Limerick Senior Championship for eight years, will take place at the Gaelic Grounds on Friday (throw-in 7.15pm).

The Limerick County Board have moved to avoid any such unsavoury scenes again by confining supporters to the main stand for the rematch.
