Omens good for Galway after All-Ireland club success

Galway clubs paved the way for the Seniors tomorrow when taking four of the six All-Ireland Sevens/Elevens titles on offer this afternoon.

At Glenalbyn, Mullagh claimed their first One Direct All-Ireland Kilmacud Crokes Senior Cup Sevens title in the 40th hosting of the competition tonight.

Galway clubs were in superb form in this competition, with all four cup semi-finalists hailing from the west.

Mullagh accounted for Beagh by 4-10 to 0-7 in their last-four clash, while Gort were 3-9 to 1-6 winners over Kiltomer.

In a high-scoring final, Mullagh prevailed by 9-9 to 7-8, but only after a strong start by Gort.

Gort led by 6-1 to 2-3 after just nine minutes, with Greg Lally and Gerry O'Donoghue among their goalscorers.

However, Mullagh rallied before the break to ensure a 6-3 to 4-5 interval score-line.

Gort found it tough in the second half, with goals from Kevin Briscoe, Conor Dervan, Cathal Hardiman and Alan White pushing them 8-8 to 6-7 ahead.

Donal Reilly put the gloss on victory with Mullagh's ninth goal deep into injury-time to ensure a seven-point win.

After the game Mullagh captain Niall Cahalane received the cup from Leinster GAA Chairman Martin Skelly, while Gort goalkeeper Peter Cummins took the Player of the Tournament award.

A quartet of unanswered goals late on for Eire Óg Corrachoill earned the Kildare side Kilmacud Crokes All-Ireland Sevens Shield honours thanks to a 5-6 to 0-5 win over Eoghan Ruadh Dungannon.

Father and son combination Joe and Evan Dempsey scored two goals each in the closing 10 minutes.

Clarinbridge took the U-13 Sevens title thanks to a 1-6 to 0-3 win over Douglas, Cork.

Ratoath Intermediate 11s honours went to Moycullen. In an all-Galway final Moycullen claimed a slender 4-6 to 3-8 win over Kilmor in the decider.

Blackrock retained their St Judes All-Ireland Junior Sevens Cup title, following victory over Shannon Rovers, in a repeat of the 2011 decider.

Galway side Kilbeacanty took St. Jude's Junior Shield honours, prevailing over Eire Óg, Clare in the decider.

Meanwhile, Louth's Brian White secured the inaugural All-Ireland Cic Saor title at Marist College, Dundalk.

The Wee County star bagged a cheque for €2,000 in a competition organised by the Dundalk Young Irelands club.

Meath's Joe Sheridan came second, with Louth senior player Jim McEnaney in third spot. Kerry's Bryan Sheehan came fourth, while Armagh's Oisin McConville and Dublin veteran Barney Rock also competed.
