McGeeney likely to continue Kildare crusade

Kieran McGeeney's future as Kildare senior football manager will become clearer in the coming weeks, according to County Board Chairman John McMahon.

McGeeney is poised to see out his current three-year term with the Lilywhites, meaning that he will continue to be in charge for one more season.

The disappointment and frustration caused by the county's fourth All-Ireland SFC quarter-final defeat in five years, allied to the lack of a Leinster title, is likely to spur McGeeney's men on for a renewed effort in 2013.

Kildare GAA Chairman McMahon told the Evening Herald: "Kieran has to make his own mind up first and there is a consultation process there with the management team, the players and the County Board.

"There is most definitely not any rush to get things sorted. We need to give people time to digest the result (against Cork last weekend). The result was the result and it was a huge shock to everybody but we will all take a bit of time."

He added: "(Regarding the appointment) We're not talking about months here, we're talking about weeks, but Kieran McGeeney is not a quitter."

While McGeeney looks likely to remain in place, some of Kildare's more experienced players may contemplate retirement with captain John Doyle being one of them.

Speaking to KFM after the loss to Cork, Doyle admitted: "It was a pleasure to be part of that team, it definitely is a young man's game and unfortunately, I'm not getting any younger.

"Who knows what the year will bring. There will be a lot of changes, I'm sure."
