Galway name Mulholland as new football boss
Former Galway player Alan Mulholland has been installed as the county's new senior footballer manager, taking over from the axed Tomás Ó Flatharta.
Mulholland was ratified last night for a three-year term. He is hoping transfer the success he had with the Galway underage teams onto the senior stage - he managed the minors to an All-Ireland title in 2007 and repeated the feat with the Under-21s earlier this year.
He was the only candidate put forward for the vacant senior position after Sligo manager Kevin Walsh, Gerry Fahy and Billy Joyce took themselves out of contention.
Mulholland hails from the Salthill/Knocknacarra club and works as a bookmaker in Galway city.
Unsurprisingly, two men who were part of the successful Galway U-21 management panel last season, Tuam Stars manager Alan Flynn and Donal Ó Flatharta from Spiddal, will assist Mulholland in his new role.
Some stability is needed in the Galway set-up after the appointment of four different managers in as many years.
Liam Sammon lasted two years after coming on board in September 2007, and Joe Kernan and Tomás Ó Flatharta just had one season each.
