NFL Division 3 round-up

Offaly, Tipperary and Wexford were the winners on the opening day of action in Allianz NFL Division 1, while the meeting of Louth and Westmeath was postponed.

Ciaran McManus scored 0-4 as his 15th season in Offaly colours began on a positive note. He helped his side claim a 1-12 to 0-8 victory over Cavan at O'Connor Park in Tullamore.

Cavan led by 0-2 to 0-0 early on, but Offaly edged ahead and were 0-7 to 0-2 to the good at half-time.

A goal from senior debutant Bernard Allen, who profited from Niall McNamee's well-timed pass, pushed the hosts 1-11 to 0-7 ahead. Tom Cribbin's charges never looked back as they continued their good home league record of recent campaigns.

Meanwhile, Tipperary gave a stirring performance at Semple Stadium as they beat 2010 Munster SFC finalists Limerick on a 0-10 to 0-6 scoreline.

The sides were level on three occasions in this low-scoring encounter. Indeed, it took a late scoring burst to ensure a four-point win for John Evans' charges.

Tipperary outscored the Shannonsiders by 0-9 to 0-3 in the second half, having trailed by 0-3 to 0-1 at half-time. Peter Acheson, Brian Jones, Barry and Seamus Grogan, Philip Austin and Conor Sweeney all kicked second half points, in a game watched by just 480 spectators.

Wexford put their poor early season form behind them as they ran out comfortable 4-11 to 2-6 winners over neighbours Waterford.

Ben Brosnan led the charge at Wexford Park, finishing with a 2-5 haul. Kevin O'Grady's injury-time goal gave the Model County side a 1-9 to 0-2 interval lead, and Brosnan's second half brace saw Jason Ryan's men canter clear.

Following an early morning inspection, Louth's opening clash with Westmeath was called off due to an unplayable pitch at Drogheda. A decision on a refixture will be made tomorrow.
