Connacht FBD League round-up
Mayo motored into the Connacht FBD League final courtesy of a 1-11 to 0-2 hammering of Leitrim at Ballinamore, while Roscommon beat GMIT in the competition’s other game today.
Mark Ronaldson, who came in as a late call-up to the Mayo attack, shone in the opening half with a six-point tally. Aidan Campbell also weighed in with a brace as James Horan’s men led by 0-8 to 0-1 at the interval.
Brian McDonald landed a fifth minute point for Leitrim’s only score in the opening half, and substitute Colm Maguire registered their second in the closing minutes of the game.
With the competitiveness gone out of this tie by the half hour mark, both Horan and his opposite number took the chance to unload their benches ahead of the start of the National League next weekend.
Mayo’s goal arrived when Aidan Kilcoyne toe-poked the ball home after an initial point attempt from Ronaldson had bounced back off a post.
Ronaldson, who has shown some impressive early season form, ended with 0-7 in all, while Andy Moran also picked off two second half points.
Mayo’s third successive win under new manager Horan has teed up a home FBD League final clash with John Maughan’s NUI Galway side in Castlebar on Friday week.
Connacht champions Roscommon completed their run in the competition at Ballyforan, beating a game GMIT outfit by 1-15 to 1-11.
Substitute Brian Cregg top-scored for the Rossies with 1-1, with Cian Smith (0-3), Cathal Shine (0-2), Fintan Cregg (0-2) and Jonathan Dunning (0-2) also looking the part in front of goal.
Kilbride’s Darren Clabby scored the goal for GMIT, who trailed by 0-8 to 0-5 at half-time.
Full-forward and free-taker Stephen Griffin from Donegal finished with 0-6 for the students.
