Lyons and Carr on Mayo shortlist

Two former Dublin bosses, Tommy Lyons and Tommy Carr, have entered the race to become the next Mayo senior football manager.

Chairman James Waldron told Monday's meeting of the Mayo County Board that the pair are now in the running for the position, along with initial nominees John Maughan, James Horan, Denis Kearney, Anthony McGarry and Mick O'Dwyer.

Lyons has been out of inter-county management since September 2004 when he quit as Dublin manager after three eventful years in charge.

His previous stint with Offaly, between 1997 and 1999, yielded a Leinster title - a feat he matched in his debut season with the Dubs.

He has most recently been seen an analyst on RTE Television's live Championship coverage and 'The Sunday Game'.

Commenting to the Mayo News this week, Lyons said: "I was asked if I'd let my name go forward and I said that it would be an honour to be involved, to manage Mayo.

"At the same time, if they want to go with a local guy, a local candidate, then I won't stand in their way.

"But I'd like to think I'm a passionate Mayo man too, having lived in Castlebar until I was 11 years of age."

Carr, who led Dublin between 1999 and 2001, quit as Cavan manager in July after a heavy All-Ireland qualifier defeat to eventual finalists Cork.

Lyons, Carr and the rest of the managerial candidates have two weeks to submit their plans 'in document form' to a sub-committee of the Mayo County Board.

The sub-committee - comprised of James Waldron, Secretary Sean Feeney, Treasurer JP Lambe and Vice Chairman Paddy McNicholas - will assess the submissions and the Chairman will report back to club delegates, before the interview phase commences.
