Carlow grab historic win

Carlow 3-12 Antrim 1-15

Carlow's hurlers created history at Dr Cullen Park as they scored the county's first win over Antrim with a memorable three-point triumph.

In an ill-tempered tie, Antrim's frustrations got the better of them as they ended the 70 minutes down to 13 players and the defeat has put a serious dent in their promotion hopes.

The Saffrons made a disastrous start to the game and by the 23rd minute, they were left without their starting full-back Cormac Donnelly, who was yellow carded, and goalkeeper Ryan McGarry (red card).

Carlow had also chalked up their first goal by that time. Robbie Foley set up Craig Doyle for a neat finish to the net.

Foley then turned scorer when he claimed Carlow's second goal with a crisp, first time shot. The home side were 2-7 to 0-5 to the good at half-time.

The Saffrons responded after the break, with Brendan Herron, Paul Shiels, Paddy Richmond and Karl McKeegan coming to the fore.

They closed the gap to just one point before disaster struck once again.

They had a second player dismissed and soon after Damien Roberts smacked home Carlow's third goal, which was the clinching score.
