An experimental Cork football team kick-starts the new season against Cork IT in the McGrath Cup preliminary round at Páirc Uí Rinn on Sunday, 2pm.

The team, which will be picked tonight, will include a number of players who’ve not worn the red jersey in the past.

The Rebel management won’t have access to any of the players involved with college teams.

“We will not be playing any of our so-called first 15, more like those from 16-30 in our panel,” said selector Ger O’Sullivan.

And Cork have been busy in their attempts to unearth new talent ahead of the opening division two league game against Meath on February 1.

“We ran an inter-division blitz featuring two semi-finals, a final and a third v fourth place play-off, ensuring everyone was guaranteed two games.

CIT, who host the Sigerson Cup at the end of February, will provide formidable opposition.

Their team will include regular Cork player Daniel Goulding in attack and county panellists Stephen O’Donoghue and Paul Kerrigan, as well as Ray Carey and Paul O’Flynn.

Sunday’s game also marks the start of the new rules governing yellow card offences.

A player who is shown a straight yellow must be replaced at the next break in play and cannot be re-introduced.

If the same player is yellow carded a second time in the next game he is automatically suspended for the following game.

Sunday’s winners meet Clare on Sunday week in the quarter-final.
