Camogie stars sing while they're winning
The Wexford camogie team have followed the best tradition of cup final songs by hitting the the recording studio ahead of this Sunday’s All-Ireland final clash against Cork.
With the help of former winning goalkeeper Teresa Shields, lead singer of Wexford band Teresa and the Stars, they have put together a country tune which they hope will become a cult classic.
Shields played on the Wexford winning 1968 team and enlisted current players Bridget Curran and sisters Claire and Aoife O’Connor to record the tune.
The song, ’The Girls of Wexford’, was the brainchild of the team’s publicity officer Barbara Ryan.
She wrote the song back in November before the girls showed any signs of making it to the Croke Park final.
It follows on from the cult success of the Irish group the Wild Swans who penned the tune ’Dancing at the Crossroads’ after Wexford hurlers won the Liam McCarthy cup in 1996.
“We felt with the men having ’Dancing at the Crossroads’, we should have our own song to commemorate the girls reaching the final so we are hoping it will help boost the team ahead of Sunday,” Ryan said.
The song is available to buy in Wexford Town and fans can log on to South East Radio’s website to hear it.
